Review on conferences `Current political issues in...`

One of the most enriching parts of the project Human is the reason, Human is the answer, were 3 conferences that took place at Faculty of Social Sciences of Masaryk university. All the groups that took part in this project, except for the Czech one, had a chance to present political issues, human rights violations and other problems of their countries. All the participants took their preparation very seriously as they perceived these conferences as a unique chance to present these issues in front of Czech academic audience. Generally said, every conference attracted a lot of Czech students’ and other people’s attention so the audience was diverse and most of the times involved and curious. Every country was assigned 4 hours, which were divided into two sections. In the first part participants could present what they’d prepared and in the second part there was a place for experts in the subject.
The three days of conferences were launched by Georgian presentation. Four members of this group, namely Tornike Metreveli, Tornike Lezhava, Ana Gachechiladze and Ana Kurdgelashvili took part and did their best to inform the audience about troubles their country has to face. As they are very active in political a journalist sphere in Georgia, their views were sophisticated and consequently well accepted. At the beginning, they introduced their country’s culture and history and then they continued with political topics. Most frequently mentioned topics were relations with Russia, which is perceived, using the name of their conference, as 200 years of oppression. Problems with areas of South Ossetia and Abkhazia were also in the centre of their attentio

n. After this part, there was a space for discussion, which was very welcome and a lot of questions were raised. A short break for refreshment followed and after that experts had a chance to express their opinions on the topic. A lively discussion after took place too.
Second day was dedicated to Armenia. This time all the members took part, namely Shushan Harutyunyan, Lusine Shahnazaryan, Hovhannes Jonas Grigoryan, Hamlet Melkumyan Alexanian and Anna Ghazaryan. As the participants were, again, involved and highly educated people, the conference was inspirational. Armenian group decided not to speak about Armenian genocide, because they felt it would not be objective enough as there was not the other involved side - Turkey (the Turkish participants were belong to Kurdish ethnic minority). The issues raised were problems with Armenian press, which misuses the freedom of speech, then rights of women which are still a problematic but as Anna Ghazaryan suggested, they are improving. In the expert’s part and during the discussions, lot of other interesting topics were raised.
The last day of conferences concentrated on Turkey and its issues. Ramazan Önder, Erkan Toy, Semih Kurt, Nur Öner and Serhat Can Sevim firstly introduced the beauties of Turkish culture and then paid attention mainly to problems of Kurdish minority, the role of Islam in Turkey and also to the specific role of Turkish army. Everyone in the audience appreciated their openness while speaking about issues that are mostly forbidden to speak about in Turkey. As Turkey as a whole is not frequently discussed at the faculty of social sciences of Masaryk university, this topic drew a lot of student’s attention. Among the specialist that contributed to the second part of the conference were as at the previous conferences Emil Souleimanov and an expert in Kurdish minority Petr Kubálek.
After each conference cultural evenings took place. These were informal parts, where all the participants, guests and students were invited. National meals, drinks and dances were introduced and people met and discussed together in a relaxed and warm atmosphere.
